Ontario Charity Raises $26K for Remote First Nations Babies

When basic baby supplies cost four times more than they should, new mothers face an impossible choice between their child's needs and their family's survival.

Donors across Ontario just made that choice easier for over 100 families. The Mikinakoos Children's Fund raised more than $26,000 through its Newborn Campaign, bringing essential supplies to mothers in remote, fly-in First Nations communities across Northern Ontario.

The campaign provided diapers, formula, breast pumps, teething toys, and other necessities to families living in communities where these items are often unavailable at local stores. When they are available, prices can reach four times what families in southern Ontario pay.

Every $200 raised provides one new mother with essential supplies for her baby during their first critical months together. The charity said the funds will support more than 100 mothers and newborns who would otherwise struggle to access basics.

"The outpouring of support for Indigenous newborns we have seen this holiday season is absolutely incredible," said Stephanie Paxton, the charity's executive director. "Every donation is helping us reach more families and ensure no mother has to go without the basics for her baby."

Support came from across the province in many forms. Some donors gave money, while others contributed diapers, formula, and handmade quilts for the families.

Sioux Lookout Regional Physicians Services Inc. made the campaign's largest single contribution with a $10,000 donation. That gift alone provided 20,000 diapers and helped the charity surpass its fundraising goal.

The Ripple Effect

Alex Fox, a fetal alcohol spectrum coordinator at Sachigo Lake First Nation, sees the immediate difference these supplies make in remote communities. "It becomes very stressful for mothers and infants when there are no supplies available at the local stores," Fox said. "These programs are much needed and go a long way."

The stress relief extends beyond individual families. When mothers have what they need for their babies, entire communities benefit from healthier, less stressed families building stronger foundations during those crucial early months.

Mikinakoos Children's Fund continues working toward its larger mission of ending child poverty in Northern Ontario, and supporters can still donate online to help reach more families.

One community at a time, basic supplies are becoming less of a luxury and more of a guarantee for Northern Ontario's newest arrivals.
