OpenAI Proposes 4-Day Work Week as AI Transforms Jobs

The company behind ChatGPT just released a bold vision for the AI era, and it includes more time off for workers.

OpenAI published a "people-first" policy report encouraging employers to試試 four-day work weeks without cutting pay as AI tools become more powerful. The proposal recognizes that while AI will bring major benefits, it will also disrupt careers and daily life in unprecedented ways.

The tech company's report suggests that as AI systems complete tasks faster, organizations should share those efficiency gains with employees. Beyond shorter work weeks, businesses could boost retirement contributions, cover more healthcare costs, and subsidize childcare.

"If progress continues, we can expect systems to be capable of carrying out projects that currently take people months," OpenAI's report states. The company believes this shift will fundamentally reshape how organizations operate and how people find meaning in their work.

The timing matters because AI tools are advancing rapidly. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey warned in December that AI-driven job displacement could mirror disruptions seen during the Industrial Revolution.

The Ripple Effect

OpenAI isn't stopping at workplace benefits. The company also recommends creating more jobs in people-facing sectors like childcare, education, and healthcare, where human connection remains irreplaceable.

The proposal includes establishing a "public wealth fund" that would give everyday citizens a financial stake in AI-driven economic growth. This echoes similar ideas from rival AI company Anthropic, which published its own policy vision in October.

Professor Gina Neff of Cambridge University notes that sharing tech efficiency gains with workers isn't a new concept. But she points out an interesting twist: "OpenAI wants other companies to pay workers more while also paying them for subscriptions to their services."

Not everyone believes AI's impact will arrive as quickly as tech companies predict. Adam Slater, lead economist at Oxford Economics, cautions that transformative productivity gains from new technology "can take decades to materialize and can also tail off surprisingly quickly."

Still, OpenAI's vision offers a refreshing perspective: technology doesn't have to mean choosing between innovation and worker wellbeing. Companies can embrace both by sharing the fruits of progress with the people who make it possible.
