Orcas Surprise Fisherman 1km Off Auckland Coast

James Papalii has spent countless days fishing the waters around Mangere Bridge, but nothing prepared him for what surfaced near his boat last Tuesday afternoon.

The 66-year-old spotted massive dorsal fins cutting through the water just 1km from the boat ramp. A pod of orcas had wandered into the shallow Auckland harbor, swimming peacefully alongside local fishing boats around 1:30pm.

Papalii quickly pulled out his phone and captured video footage of the unexpected visitors. The orcas glided through the water, their distinctive black and white markings clearly visible as they passed within meters of his vessel.

"We were really excited," Papalii said. "We're out on the water all the time and we've never seen anything like this in Mangere Bridge."

The moment felt surreal for the experienced fisherman who runs the local waka club. Instead of fear, Papalii described an overwhelming sense of peace watching the ocean's apex predators move gracefully through the water.

"It's interesting watching them come close to the boat," he said. "They just seem so peaceful."
