Orcas Surprise Fisherman 1km Off Auckland Coast
A local fisherman got the shock of his life when a pod of orcas surfaced just meters from his boat in south Auckland's Mangere Bridge. After 66 years on the water, James Papalii had never seen anything like it.
James Papalii has spent countless days fishing the waters around Mangere Bridge, but nothing prepared him for what surfaced near his boat last Tuesday afternoon.
The 66-year-old spotted massive dorsal fins cutting through the water just 1km from the boat ramp. A pod of orcas had wandered into the shallow Auckland harbor, swimming peacefully alongside local fishing boats around 1:30pm.
Papalii quickly pulled out his phone and captured video footage of the unexpected visitors. The orcas glided through the water, their distinctive black and white markings clearly visible as they passed within meters of his vessel.
"We were really excited," Papalii said. "We're out on the water all the time and we've never seen anything like this in Mangere Bridge."
The moment felt surreal for the experienced fisherman who runs the local waka club. Instead of fear, Papalii described an overwhelming sense of peace watching the ocean's apex predators move gracefully through the water.
Sunny's Take
There's something magical about wildlife showing up where you least expect it. For Papalii, who has dedicated his life to the water and his community through the waka club, this encounter represented a once-in-a-lifetime gift from nature.
The orcas weren't just passing through, they lingered near the boats, curious and calm. Papalii watched in wonder as these magnificent creatures, often called killer whales despite being the largest members of the dolphin family, demonstrated the peaceful nature that marine experts often describe.
"It's interesting watching them come close to the boat," he said. "They just seem so peaceful."
The sighting reminds us that New Zealand's waters remain vibrant ecosystems where extraordinary encounters can happen any day. For one local fisherman, an ordinary Tuesday became an unforgettable memory he'll treasure forever.
