Oregon Senior Athlete Earns $5K Scholarship to Study Engineering
Astoria High School's valedictorian and three-sport captain just earned a $5,000 scholarship for balancing straight A's, state championships, and community service. Quin Gohr is one of six outstanding Oregon students sharing $40,000 in awards this year.
A high school senior who juggled being valedictorian, basketball record-holder, and state track champion just got recognized with a scholarship that celebrates the whole student.
Quin Gohr from Astoria High School received a $5,000 OnPoint Community Credit Union Scholar Award on Tuesday. He was one of six Oregon seniors chosen from OSAA member schools, with scholarships totaling $40,000.
Gohr maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while captaining three sports teams: football, basketball, and track and field. He became Astoria's all-time leading basketball scorer and won a state championship in the 400-meter dash.
But his achievements stretched beyond the classroom and field. Gohr served as senior class president, represented students on the school board, and coordinated his school's freshman transition program to help younger students adjust to high school.
He also earned his Associate of Arts degree through Clatsop Community College while still in high school. Between practices and leadership roles, he found time to help raise funds for local nonprofits in his community.

Why This Inspires
Gohr's story shows what's possible when young people refuse to choose between passions. He didn't pick between academics or athletics or service. He proved you can excel at all three with dedication and smart time management.
Two students in the program received $10,000 awards: Natalie Kawaguchi from Mountainside High School and Kiana Cynthia McNeil from Waldport High School. Three others joined Gohr with $5,000 scholarships: David Villanueva from Woodburn, Kinna Freid from Klamath Union, and Owyhee Harguess from Enterprise.
The scholarship requires students to maintain at least a 3.50 unweighted GPA and earn a varsity letter or compete in an OSAA activity. Since 2019, the program has awarded more than $180,000 to 43 Oregon students.
"These six students represent the very best of Oregon, demonstrating excellence not only in the classroom and athletic competition, but through leadership, perseverance, and service," said Rob Stuart, OnPoint's president and CEO. The credit union partners with the Oregon School Activities Association to identify students who embody well-rounded excellence.
Gohr plans to study engineering at Oregon State University this fall, bringing his work ethic and leadership skills to his next chapter.
