Orlando Nonprofit Hits $200M in Free School Supplies
A Gift for Teaching has distributed $200 million worth of free school supplies to Central Florida classrooms since 1998. Every dollar donated provides $10 in resources for students in high-need schools.
A small nonprofit in Orlando just proved that generosity can reach nine figures when a community rallies behind its teachers and students.
A Gift for Teaching announced this week it has distributed more than $200 million worth of educational resources to classrooms across Orange and Osceola counties since opening its doors in 1998. The organization runs a free supply store where teachers from high-need public schools can pick up everything from pencils to art supplies without spending a dime of their own money.
"Reaching $200 million in distributed school supplies is about far more than a number," said Jane Thompson, president of A Gift for Teaching. "It reflects nearly three decades of generosity, partnership, and a community that believes in teachers and students."
The math behind the milestone makes it even more impressive. Every single dollar donated turns into $10 worth of classroom resources through bulk purchasing and partnerships. That means the community has invested roughly $20 million in actual donations to reach this achievement.
Teachers often spend hundreds of dollars from their own paychecks each year on classroom basics. A Gift for Teaching removes that burden by stocking a warehouse where educators can shop for free, treating essential learning tools as exactly what they are: necessities, not luxuries.
The organization runs on donations, supply drives, volunteers, and monthly supporters called Classroom Heroes. These regular donors ensure the supply warehouse stays stocked year-round, not just during back-to-school season.
The Ripple Effect
When teachers don't have to worry about buying glue sticks and notebooks, they can focus their energy on what they do best: teaching. Students benefit too, showing up to class with the same tools as their peers, leveling the playing field from day one.
Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings highlighted how the milestone reflects community values. "This demonstrates the power of a community coming together to support students and educators," he said. "By helping provide essential classroom supplies, A Gift for Teaching is ensuring our students have every opportunity to succeed."
The nonprofit plans to celebrate with billboards across Central Florida and a presentation at an upcoming school board meeting. Their biggest event of the year, the Great Big Backpack Build, happens June 4 at the Orange County Convention Center. Hundreds of volunteers will pack 30,000 backpacks with school supplies to kick off the back-to-school campaign.
Nearly three decades in, this Orlando nonprofit shows no signs of slowing down.
