Orphaned at Birth, 23-Year-Old Woman Becomes Train Driver

When Kalpana Prajapati's father died from an electric shock two days before her training officer exam, she had every reason to quit. Instead, the 23-year-old from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, doubled down on her studies and just became an assistant loco pilot for Indian Railways.

Kalpana never knew her mother, who died shortly after giving birth in 2003. Her grandmother Lallaiya Prajapati raised her in a small village, surrounding her with love even as loss shadowed her childhood.

The hardest blow came in 2024, right when Kalpana needed stability most. Her father Godhan Lal Prajapati's sudden death could have ended her railway dreams before they started.

But Kalpana refused to let tragedy write her story. She took a job at a local library to support herself while continuing her exam preparation at Government ITI in Rewa.

Her family became her foundation. Her grandmother, uncles, and maternal relatives pooled their support, while training officer Narendra Dwivedi mentored her through the technical preparation.

The work paid off. Kalpana cleared all stages of the South East Central Railway examination and received her appointment letter from the Divisional Railway Manager in Bilaspur this month.

Her first trial run is scheduled for June 18, 2026. For a young woman who started life without a mother and lost her father at the worst possible moment, the railway uniform represents more than a job.

Kalpana admits the achievement would feel sweeter if her father were alive to celebrate. That honest acknowledgment makes her success even more powerful, showing that triumph and grief can coexist.

Her grandmother, who stepped in as mother and protector 23 years ago, now watches her granddaughter prepare to drive trains across India. The village that saw Kalpana grow up with loss now sees her as proof that determination outlasts hardship.

At just 23, Kalpana hasn't erased her painful past, but she's built a future that honors everyone who believed in her when life kept taking people away.
