Outback Town Fights to Keep Free Cool Haven Open Longer
In Alice Springs, where temperatures hit 40°C and beyond, residents are petitioning to extend their public library's weekend hours. The library is the town's only truly free, air-conditioned public space where anyone can escape extreme heat.
When the mercury hits 40 degrees Celsius in Alice Springs, there's one free refuge where everyone is welcome: the public library. But on weekends, it closes at 1pm, right when the desert heat becomes most brutal.
The Central Australian town endures 93 days over 35°C each year, and 17 days above 40°C. For residents without air conditioning at home, the library offers more than books—it's a lifeline.
Former library worker Hannah Ekin started a petition calling for longer weekend hours, and 500 people have already signed. The library currently opens from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays, compared to 10am to 6pm on weekdays.
"I think it's one of the most important public spaces we have in town and really the only truly free public space that everyone in town can access," Ekin said. On an average weekend day, 125 people visit during those three short hours.
The Alice Springs Town Council voted to investigate extending the hours, though some councillors worry about staffing costs. Ekin argues the expense is minimal for something with such high community value.
The Ripple Effect
What makes this library special goes beyond temperature control. Library staff have become vital community support workers, helping older residents access their superannuation online, teaching kids to use iPads, and assisting scam victims.
Cathie Warburton from the Australian Library and Information Association says libraries nationwide are filling crucial gaps as government services move online. With free internet, computers, and knowledgeable staff, libraries serve people who lack digital access or literacy.
For Ekin, who worked at the library, the community connections made the job meaningful. It's where strangers become neighbors, where help is always available, and where everyone belongs regardless of their circumstances.
The council is now preparing a report on making extended weekend hours a reality.
