Oxford Campaign Delivers 1,000 Books to Kids Who Struggle
A literacy charity just received over 1,000 children's books to help young readers who are falling behind. The campaign brought together local businesses, schools, and authors during National Storytelling Week.
More than 1,000 children's books are heading to Oxfordshire classrooms where struggling readers need them most, thanks to a community campaign that turned concern into action.
Assisted Reading for Children (ARCh), a Bicester-based literacy charity, launched the book drive during National Storytelling Week with help from Oxford PR agency Fortitude Communications. The campaign asked for good-quality softback books that could be used in one-on-one reading sessions with primary school students.
Business owners, schools, and local authors including Adrian Townsend and Sandra Plumb answered the call. Emma Orton, recruitment manager at ARCh, said the response exceeded expectations and will make a real difference for the children they work with.
The campaign was sparked by troubling data from the National Literacy Trust showing reading levels among primary school children are declining. Some schools now believe students can't read a full novel anymore, according to Greig Box Turnbull, director at Fortitude Communications.
ARCh tackles this challenge by sending trained volunteers into more than 100 schools across Oxfordshire. Each volunteer works one-on-one with children who struggle with literacy, building their skills and confidence through regular reading sessions.
Since becoming an independent charity, ARCh has reached nearly 1,000 children with help from over 300 volunteers. The organization depends on donated books to keep these sessions running and give kids access to stories that match their interests and reading levels.
The Ripple Effect
The book drive shows what happens when a community recognizes a problem and acts together. Every donated book means another chance for a child to discover that reading can be joyful, not just difficult.
Fortitude Communications is also creating a professional video for ARCh to raise awareness of its work across the county. Smiths of Bletchington donated a driver and van to deliver all 1,000 books to the charity.
ARCh continues recruiting volunteers who want to help young readers gain the skills that will shape their entire futures.
