Ozone Park Teen Earns $3,000 Scholarship for Nursing Dream
Emma Fernandez dedicated over 100 hours volunteering at Jamaica Hospital and community events before graduating high school. Her service and academic excellence just earned her a $3,000 scholarship toward her nursing career at NYU.
A recent high school graduate from Ozone Park is heading to New York University this fall with $3,000 in scholarship support, earned through countless hours of caring for her community.
Emma Fernandez received the Conte Memorial Academic Scholarship on June 11 at Senator Joseph Addabbo's Woodhaven office. The St. Francis Preparatory School graduate accumulated over 100 volunteer hours at Jamaica Hospital in Ozone Park and at Lions Club events, including trunk-or-treats and Christmas tree lighting ceremonies.
The scholarship comes from the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators, a bipartisan group that awards four $3,000 scholarships annually to students in their represented districts. Recipients must maintain at least an 85% GPA, demonstrate financial need, and show commitment to either academics or athletics.
Fernandez plans to pursue a career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, a specialized role focused on administering anesthesia and sedation medications. Her volunteer work at Jamaica Hospital gave her early exposure to the healthcare field she hopes to serve professionally.

"Emma's academic excellence and community service embody the best of our district," Senator Addabbo said. "I wish her all the best as she pursues her future career as a CRNA."
Why This Inspires
Emma's story shows how young people are choosing to invest in their communities long before they receive any recognition or reward. She didn't volunteer to win a scholarship. She volunteered because she saw needs around her and wanted to help.
Her hundred-plus hours at the hospital weren't just resume builders. They were genuine contributions to patient care and community health in Ozone Park. Those hours also helped her discover her calling in nursing, turning service into purpose.
Now, the investment she made in others is coming back to support her education. The $3,000 scholarship will help offset the costs of attending NYU, one of the nation's top nursing programs.
Young people like Emma are building the healthcare workforce of tomorrow while strengthening their communities today.
