Para Swimmer Jenna Jones Wins First Gold After 10 Years

Ten years after her international debut as a teenager, Para swimmer Jenna Jones finally stood atop the podium with her first major individual gold medal.

The 25-year-old Australian dominated the women's 100 meter S13 freestyle at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, adding a bronze in the 50m freestyle. It was a breakthrough moment for an athlete who first competed at the Rio Paralympics when she was just 15 years old.

Jones, who was diagnosed with a rare degenerative eye disease in kindergarten, credits sport with giving her confidence and independence. "It taught me how to move my body and showed me how to trust my body," she told ABC Weekend Breakfast from her Sunshine Coast home.

The timing couldn't be better. Jones heads to the Para Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in California this week riding the high of her Glasgow success and eager to mentor the team's many rookies making their international debuts.

But Jones isn't the only gold medalist in her household. Her Australian shepherd, Luna, competes in rally, a sport testing obedience and agility where handlers and dogs navigate courses together. Luna has her own gold medal collection.

"She's my best friend. Honestly, we have the same personality, which is scary sometimes," Jones said. The duo is even exploring ambassadorship opportunities, with Luna potentially becoming a dog model.

Jones represents the power of patience and persistence in pursuit of excellence. A decade is a long time to wait for a first individual title, but she never stopped believing in herself or working toward her goals.

Now balancing her swimming career with university studies for a counseling diploma, Jones reflects on how far she's come. "Thinking about little 13-year-old me breaking those records, she would be so proud of where I am today," she said.

The young girl from the Blue Mountains who broke records at her first national championships has grown into a senior team member ready to inspire the next generation of Para swimmers.
