Paralympian Kate Shoemaker Breaks World Record at Worlds
U.S. Paralympian Kate Shoemaker and her horse Vianne just shattered a world record while winning gold at the Para Dressage World Championships in Germany. The pair scored 78.889% in their event, with Shoemaker crying tears of joy before her final halt.
Kate Shoemaker wasn't thinking about scores or medals when she entered the arena in Aachen, Germany last Thursday. She was thinking about showing the world just how special her horse Vianne truly is.
The two-time U.S. Paralympian delivered exactly that. Shoemaker and Vianne, her eight-year-old Hanoverian mare, scored 78.889% in the Para Grand Prix Test A Grade IV competition, breaking the world record and winning individual gold at the 2026 Para Dressage World Championships.
"The entire test felt harmonious, and that was the one thing I wanted," said Shoemaker after her personal-best performance. Two judges even scored the pair above 80%, recognizing the magic unfolding in the Allianz Prize Stadium.
This marks Shoemaker's second world record in Aachen. The 38-year-old Wellington, Florida resident set another record at the same venue just four months earlier in April.
But the numbers tell only part of the story. Shoemaker, who has partial paralysis in her right leg from a brain injury at birth, described how her partnership with Vianne has transformed since the Paris Paralympics last summer.

"Coming into Paris, we were trying to figure each other out," she explained. "This year, we came into our own as a partnership, and it feels so easy."
The connection ran so deep during Thursday's performance that Shoemaker found herself crying before the final halt. "She gives me her whole heart," she said. "She was completely one with me."
Why This Inspires
Shoemaker's gold came just one day after teammate Marie Vonderheyden won gold in a different grade, giving Team USA back-to-back victories. Chef d'Equipe Michel Assouline called it "a very good feeling" and noted the technical difficulty of achieving high scores in the upper grades.
The win also represents a beautiful evolution from Shoemaker's bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships in Denmark. Four years later, with a different horse and deeper partnership, she's reached the top of the podium.
Shoemaker will compete again Saturday in the Para Grand Prix Test B Grade IV event, with another chance to showcase the bond she and Vianne have built. Their journey shows what's possible when an athlete stops chasing perfection and starts pursuing harmony.
Sometimes the world record comes when you're simply trying to honor your partner.
