Paralympic Champs Lead India's 50 Athletes in Dubai

India's Paris 2024 Paralympic gold medalists Sumit Antil and Navdeep are leading a 50-strong national team at the Fazza International Para Athletics Championships in Dubai this week. The competition marks the opening of what could be India's most successful para-athletics season yet.

The impressive roster also includes two-time Paris medalist Preeti Pal and 200-meter bronze winner Simran. Nearly 500 athletes from 56 nations are competing at Dubai Club for People of Determination through February 13.

This isn't just about early season bragging rights. The championships offer crucial qualification points for two major competitions later this year: the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games in October.

India's athletes face serious competition from some of the world's best. Belgium's Maxime Carabin, a double Paris 2024 champion with five world titles, will be testing his form alongside Canada's Austin Smeenk, who dominated the 800-meter and placed third in the 100-meter at Paris.

The host nation UAE is bringing its own firepower with 65 athletes, including multiple Paralympic and world championship medalists. UAE's Mohammed Youssef Othman said his main focus is the Asian Para Games, showing just how seriously top athletes are treating this early season test.

Both Sumit and Navdeep made history in Paris, with Navdeep's medal even being upgraded from silver to gold after the competition.
