Paralympic Gold Winner Jon Thurston Honored in Peterborough

Jon Thurston brought home Paralympic gold, and his hometown couldn't be prouder.

The Peterborough Curling Club is hosting a community celebration Friday at 6 pm to honor Thurston's stunning victory at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina. Residents are invited to join the festivities at 2195 Lansdowne Street West, where cake and refreshments will be served as the community gathers to celebrate their local champion.

Thurston and Canada's wheelchair curling team made history in Italy, finishing the competition without a single loss. The team dominated round-robin play before defeating China to claim the gold medal, cementing their place as the best in the world.

As the fourth shooter for skip Mark Ideson, Thurston has built an impressive international career since earning his spot on the national team through a skills-based shootout in 2019. He previously helped Canada secure bronze at the 2022 Paralympic Games and has collected multiple World Championship medals, including silver in 2020, 2023, and 2024, plus bronze in 2025.

But Thurston's athletic achievements extend far beyond the ice. He's also competed in adaptive water skiing, archery, boxing, and jiu-jitsu, proving that determination knows no boundaries.
