Parents Open Cafe, Employ 60+ Adults With Disabilities
When their son with Down Syndrome approached graduation, two Delaware County parents with no coffee experience opened a cafe to create his future. Ryan's Rise Up Cafe now employs over 60 young adults with disabilities.
Jim and Rose Vail faced a problem familiar to many parents of children with disabilities: their 21-year-old son Ryan was graduating, and meaningful work seemed out of reach.
The Delaware County couple had never worked in coffee. Jim built things in construction, and Rose worked in medicine. But when Ryan's graduation approached, they knew they had to create the future their son deserved.
In April 2024, Ryan's Rise Up Cafe opened its doors in Glenn Mills, Pennsylvania. Today, Ryan works alongside more than 60 other young adults with disabilities, serving coffee and proving what's possible when someone believes in your abilities.
The numbers tell a stark story. Only 22% of people with disabilities were employed in 2025, compared to 65% of people without disabilities, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ryan's Rise Up Cafe is changing that reality one job at a time.

Sunny's Take
What started as two parents fighting for their son has become a movement. The Vails didn't just create a job for Ryan. They built a place where society's perception shifts from seeing disability to recognizing ability and potential.
"In the past, they were just seeing disability, and now they're seeing these young adults with their abilities and what their goals are," Jim Vail said. The cafe has become more than a workplace. It's proof that when given the chance, people with disabilities bring talent, dedication, and joy to their work.
Rose Vail keeps perspective on what matters most. "We just hold on to what we're really doing this for," she said. "And if the coffee is good, that's a plus."
The cafe represents something bigger than excellent lattes and friendly service: it's a blueprint for inclusive employment that other businesses can follow.
