Parents Over 40 Share the Joys of Late Parenthood

When Emma became a mom at 46, she woke up the day after her son's birth feeling more content than ever before in her accomplished life. Now with a 17-month-old, her biggest wish is simple: live to 100 so she can have more years with him.

Brooke, 45, had her third child at 44 and acknowledges the reality of being called "grandma" at daycare. The hardest part isn't the age comments, though. It's the loneliness of being in a different life stage than her friends, whose kids are already in high school while she's navigating toddler tantrums.

But she's certain about one thing: she's a much better mom now than she was nine years ago. "They are so loved and in a loving family," she says. "They're so very wanted."

Mark had given up on parenthood entirely before his daughter arrived when he was 55. Now 65 with a thriving 10-year-old, he calls it "the best and most rewarding experience" of his life. The timing worked out perfectly, he says, since he got to live a carefree adult life first.

Sarah fell pregnant naturally at 45 and found the public comments awkward. People assumed she was the grandmother, not the mother. The tiredness was real, especially with a child who didn't sleep well until age four.

Now her son is 14, she's 60, and they're enjoying each other's company more than ever. "I'm so happy I had him," she says. "I always yearned for a second child."

The challenges aren't trivial. Some older parents face what Mark calls "the generational squeeze," caring for aging parents while raising young children. Others, like 28-year-old Inari whose mother had her at 47, ended up with heavy caregiving responsibilities by their mid-20s.
