Parents' Sacrifices Lift Aaron Rai to PGA Championship Win

Aaron Rai became a major champion at Aronimink Golf Club, but his victory was decades in the making, built on sacrifices that started half a world away.

Rai's parents immigrated to England from India and Kenya with little money but enormous dreams for their son. His father Amrik gave up his own ambition of playing professional tennis to focus entirely on Aaron's golf career, starting when the boy was just four years old.

His mother Dalvir worked multiple jobs to cover membership fees and tournament costs. Meanwhile, Amrik taught himself golf mechanics from scratch, watching his son's natural swing and building knowledge to help him grow.

When Aaron turned seven, his father gifted him Titleist 690 MB irons. Amrik cleaned those clubs with a pin and baby oil to prevent rust, protecting them with iron covers when not in use. Rai still uses iron covers today as a tribute to those early days.

Father and son practiced together on a customized course that grew longer as Aaron did. He didn't even play from ladies' tees until age 12. Amrik intentionally kept Aaron away from other junior golfers, letting him develop his unique style without pressure to conform.

That sheltered environment gave Rai the confidence to be different. He wears two gloves and uses iron covers, quirks that would make most pros self-conscious. But Rai knows why he does things his way and believes in those reasons completely.

What makes Rai's championship special isn't just the underdog story. His fellow competitors were genuinely thrilled he won. "You won't find one person on the property who's not happy for him," said Rory McIlroy after finishing behind Rai.

In a sport often associated with privilege, Rai climbed the ladder with humility and kindness that endeared him to everyone. Tour staff, players, and fans celebrated not just a longshot winner but one of the genuinely good people in golf getting his moment.

"Being a good person is more important than putting the ball in the cup," Rai said, crediting his parents and siblings for that foundation. Golf's humbling nature only reinforced what his family taught him from the start.

When Rai finished his winning round, he tried calling his father. Amrik, who loves traveling the UK in his camper van, had fallen asleep before the final holes. The man who walked every step of that journey for two decades missed the crowning moment.

Rai left a voicemail with two simple words: "Thank you."

Asked to reflect on his parents' sacrifices, the new champion became too emotional to speak. His father quit working to practice with him daily. His mother worked long hours to provide for the family while Amrik focused on Aaron's development.

The working-class kid from Wolverhampton became a major champion by staying true to the values his immigrant parents instilled, proving that humility and hard work still create the most inspiring victories.
