Paris Invests €20M to End School Sexual Violence

Paris is launching a major initiative to protect children in schools after confronting a painful truth about how abusers slipped through safety systems.

Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire announced Friday that the city has suspended 78 school staff members since January 2026, with 31 cases involving suspected sexual violence against children. The numbers represent a stark increase from last year, when 30 monitors were suspended total.

The mayor immediately pledged €20 million to transform how Paris protects its youngest students. His action plan includes creating an independent commission with full access to investigate recruitment, reporting, and monitoring procedures from top to bottom.

School monitors in Paris help supervise children outside classrooms, including during evening hours before parents arrive for pickup. Nine of those suspended this year worked at the same nursery school, raising urgent questions about systemic failures.

Parents criticized school management for not informing them when suspicions arose. Grégoire acknowledged the problem directly, telling Le Monde that authorities treated incidents as isolated cases when they actually revealed systemic risks and possibly a code of silence.

The mayor knows this pain personally. He has spoken publicly about experiencing sexual abuse during an after-school swimming program when he was in elementary school. That lived experience now drives his commitment to protecting other children.

Most alleged abuse cases date from 2024 and 2025, with kindergarten pupils especially vulnerable. Nearly all suspected perpetrators were men, according to Grégoire.

The Bright Side

This crisis became impossible to ignore during the mayoral campaign, forcing the issue into public view and demanding solutions. That transparency, while painful, created the political will for real change.

Paris is now establishing genuinely independent oversight with absolute freedom to investigate and recommend reforms. The €20 million investment shows the city is backing its zero tolerance pledge with serious resources.

By confronting past failures head-on rather than minimizing them, Paris is building a model other cities can follow to keep children safe.
