Patrick Kane Becomes Top-Scoring American in NHL History

A kid from Buffalo who once thought he'd never measure up to his peers just became the greatest American scorer in hockey history.

Patrick Kane notched his 1,375th career point Thursday night, passing Dallas Stars legend Mike Modano for the most points ever by an American-born NHL player. The assist came on a Ben Chiarot goal during the Detroit Red Wings' game against the Washington Capitals.

"I was just a young kid from Buffalo who tried to maybe play hockey and enjoy it, and maybe get a college scholarship or something like that," Kane said earlier this season. "You never think you'd get chances to do some pretty special things."

The milestone caps an incredible comeback story. Less than three years ago, Kane underwent hip resurfacing surgery and wasn't sure he'd play again. Few players had successfully returned from the procedure, but Kane defied the odds and has racked up 138 points in 162 games since joining Detroit.

Kane's teammate Alex DeBrincat captured the moment perfectly. "He's an American icon," DeBrincat said. "He's the best to ever do it."

The record adds to an already legendary career that includes three Stanley Cup championships with the Chicago Blackhawks, an MVP award in 2016, and two Olympic appearances for Team USA. This season alone, Kane became just the fifth American-born player to score 500 career goals.
