Patrick Mahomes Beating ACL Recovery Timeline After Surgery

Patrick Mahomes is showing the same determination in recovery that made him a three-time Super Bowl champion.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback tore his ACL in Week 15 last season during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury ended both his season and the Chiefs' decade-long playoff streak, leaving fans wondering when their star would return.

Now there's excellent news about his comeback. FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported Thursday that Mahomes is recovering much faster than initial projections suggested.

"His pain threshold is different, his work ethic is different," Glazer said on the Dan Patrick Show. "At first they were like, 'Oh, you know, start of the season.' I would probably hedge on him being back sooner than that."

The speed of Mahomes' recovery comes down to two key factors. First, doctors performed surgery before significant swelling set in, which can dramatically improve healing outcomes. Second, Mahomes attacked rehabilitation immediately with the intensity he brings to every aspect of football.

Within days of his Tuesday surgery, Mahomes was already back in the Chiefs' training room. By Thursday or Friday of that same week, he had regained 90 degrees of knee flexion. That kind of progress typically takes other patients weeks to achieve.

"He's just different, he heals differently," Glazer added.

Why This Inspires

Mahomes' approach to recovery shows what's possible when elite preparation meets adversity. After the injury, he posted a message on social media that revealed his mindset: "Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie, it hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again."

That attacking mentality appears to be paying off. While many ACL recoveries take nine to twelve months, Mahomes may return significantly earlier than the cautious initial estimates.

The Chiefs finished last season at 6-11 and are retooling their roster for Mahomes' return. They recently traded cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Rams for future draft picks as part of their rebuilding effort.
