Penn Freshman Shatters 800m Record at Home Meet

A freshman runner just announced his arrival on the national stage in spectacular fashion.

Tiago Socarras shattered the University of Pennsylvania's 800m record at the Penn Classic on Saturday, finishing first with a blazing time of 1:46.99. The time ranks 13th in the entire NCAA this season.

In the final 50 meters, Socarras chased down the race leader and powered past him to claim victory. For a first-year athlete to break a school record at a home meet is the kind of moment that entire programs celebrate for years.

But Socarras wasn't alone in making Penn track history that day. Benjamin Markham won the men's 500m with a personal best time of 1:03.33, placing him third in the Ivy League and seventh in program history.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Rianna Floyd, Sofia Swindell, Jailyn Milord, and Giuliana Ligor took first place with a time of 3:36.90, claiming the top spot in the Ivy League. Sara Khiri won the women's mile, while Kyra Compton set a personal best in the 3000m invitational.

Multiple athletes landed spots on Penn's all-time program lists. Maggie McCabe finished fifth in the women's 1000m with a time that placed her sixth in school history, while L'Mio Edwards took third with the second-fastest time ever recorded by a Penn athlete.
