Pennsylvania Gardener Grows 54cm Record-Breaking Eggplant

Erik Gunstrom wasn't discouraged when he lost his world record title just three weeks after earning it. Instead, he got creative and found a whole new way to win.

In August 2025, Gunstrom grew two eggplants weighing nearly 9 pounds combined, breaking the Guinness World Record for heaviest eggplant. But within weeks, a Swiss grower produced an even heavier specimen, snatching the title away.

Rather than chase the same record, Gunstrom shifted his focus to length. He planted a Thai Long Green eggplant variety on April 1, 2026, specifically chosen for its naturally slender shape.

The seed started in a heated greenhouse before moving outdoors in late May. Gunstrom prepared the soil carefully with organic amendments, focusing on building a strong root system to support exceptional growth.

Then Pennsylvania's weather cooperated perfectly. The summer of 2026 brought exactly what eggplants love: intense heat and plenty of rain.

By harvest time, one of Gunstrom's eggplants had stretched to 54.3 centimeters, about 21 inches long. That's nearly twice the length of typical Thai Long Green eggplants, which usually max out around 12 inches.

The previous record stood at 49 centimeters, set by British grower Peter Glazebrook in September 2025. Gunstrom didn't just beat it with one eggplant, though.

A second specimen from the same plant reached 51.6 centimeters, meaning both surpassed the old record. Having two record-breaking fruits from one growing effort shows just how well his methods worked.
