Pennsylvania Invests $100M in EV Charging Across State

Pennsylvania is about to make driving an electric vehicle a whole lot easier for people living outside big cities.

The state just announced $100 million in funding to install public EV charging stations across Pennsylvania, with a deliberate focus on smaller communities and rural areas. For years, most charging infrastructure has been concentrated in urban centers where EV ownership is higher, leaving rural drivers worried about running out of power far from home.

The rollout starts in southeastern Pennsylvania, including Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. About $34 million will fund charging stations in these areas first, with local transportation planning agencies identifying the best locations.

"Community charging is the culmination of an extraordinary effort by the Shapiro Administration to deliver accessible EV infrastructure to PA travelers," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. The goal is simple: make sure anyone can charge their vehicle, whether they live in Philadelphia or a small town hours away.

This investment helps three groups of drivers at once. Local EV owners in small communities will finally have reliable charging options close to home. Urban drivers traveling through rural areas won't have to worry about range anxiety anymore. And out-of-state visitors driving electric vehicles can confidently plan trips across Pennsylvania.

The Ripple Effect

Bringing charging stations to underserved communities does more than just power cars. It signals to residents in these areas that electric vehicles are a real option for them too, not just something for city dwellers. Small businesses near new charging stations could see more visitors who stop to charge and spend time in town while they wait.

The timing matters too. While federal support for EVs has become uncertain, states like Pennsylvania are stepping up to fill the gap. Thousands of new public chargers have been installed or planned nationwide over the past year, building the foundation for cleaner transportation regardless of political winds in Washington.
