Patients who received both treatments lived significantly longer without their cancer returning. They also went longer without developing new tumors in other parts of the body.

"It really establishes personalized cancer vaccines as being a new addition to standard cancer therapy."

The approach could even help treat rare genetic conditions. Because the technology can be customized to target any unique mutation, experts believe it opens doors to treating diseases we've struggled with for generations.

Robert Vonderheide, director of Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center, expects to see results from multiple similar studies over the next few years, and there's every reason to hope many will be positive.
