Perth Bears Unveil Jersey and Get Huge Salary Boost for 2027

The Perth Bears are making their comeback dream a reality, and they just received a game-changing advantage to compete with established teams.

The National Rugby League's newest franchise unveiled their inaugural jersey in spectacular fashion at Perth's famous WACA Ground, dropping the design from the stadium's iconic light towers. The red hoops on black pay tribute to the North Sydney Bears, who left the NRL in 1999 but never left fans' hearts.

But the bigger news came moments later. League chair Peter V'landys announced special salary cap concessions designed to help the expansion team attract marquee players.

Under the new rules, Perth can sign a star player worth over one million dollars and pay an extra 20 percent through sponsorship money that won't count against their salary cap. For a player earning $1.5 million, that's an additional $300,000 the team can offer without penalty.

The Bears also secured first rights to any contracted player wanting to leave their current club for the 2027 season. If a star player and their team want to part ways, Perth gets the first chance to sign them.

This expansion means more than just another team on the field. CEO Anthony De Ceglie announced the club is tracking toward 35,000 members before their first season even starts, showing enormous community hunger for top-level rugby league in Western Australia.

Inaugural coach Mal Meninga, a rugby league legend, expressed confidence in the roster already assembled despite the lack of headline names so far. The concessions give him flexibility to add star power while building a competitive foundation.

Melbourne Storm veterans Nick Meaney and Tyran Wishart have already committed to the Bears. Storm coach Craig Bellamy praised the move, calling it exciting for the league and backing Meninga's leadership based on their playing days together.

The 2027 season will mark Perth's return to the NRL after the Western Reds folded in 1997. With strong community support, smart recruitment incentives, and experienced leadership, the Bears are building something special in Australia's west.
