Perth Builds 174 Affordable Apartments in $100M Project

Western Australia just announced its biggest push yet to solve the housing crisis, and it's bringing hope to thousands of renters struggling in today's tight market.

The state government is spending more than $100 million on a new 30-story apartment building right in Perth's CBD, next to Perth Arena. When it opens in 2029, it will provide 174 one and two-bedroom homes, with 139 units for affordable housing and 35 for social housing.

Housing Minister John Carey says the state has never seen this level of action before. "Never have we seen in our state's history so many build-to-rent projects underway," he said, crediting support from the federal government's Housing Australia Future Fund.

The Roe Street tower isn't standing alone. It's one of 21 projects currently under construction across Western Australia, creating 1,500 new affordable apartments statewide. The government hopes to enable more than 40 build-to-rent projects across the state.

Build-to-rent projects are designed specifically for long-term renters, unlike traditional apartments with multiple owners. Once complete, the building will be sold to a community housing provider who will set rental prices and manage the property.

The Ripple Effect

Mark Glasson, chief executive of Anglicare WA, says the announcement couldn't come at a better time. "Western Australia is in the midst of a housing crisis that is unprecedented in our history," he explained.

Every day, his organization talks to people on low incomes forced to make impossible choices between paying rent and buying necessities. These new apartments will help people who aren't seeing the benefits of WA's strong economy get a foothold in the rental market.

The location matters too. Carey emphasized these homes sit close to jobs and amenities, giving residents real access to city life and opportunities. The Perth CBD location means shorter commutes and better connections to services.

While housing advocates celebrate the news, they're urging the government to keep the momentum going by continuing the Rent Relief Program and ramping up construction efforts even further.

For 174 future residents, this tower represents more than just four walls and a roof—it's stability, dignity, and a chance to build a better life in one of Australia's most vibrant cities.
