PG&E Workers Fund $300K in Scholarships for California Students

When California students open their college acceptance letters this spring, thousands will have a better shot at affording their dreams thanks to the coworkers who keep their lights on.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company employees have raised over $300,000 in scholarship funds for high school seniors and current college students living in PG&E's Northern and Central California service area. Applications are open now through February 28.

The scholarships come from 13 employee groups representing workers with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ+ employees, Black and Latino professionals, Asian American and Pacific Islander workers, and engineering networks. Every dollar was raised by the workers themselves through donations and community fundraising events.

Individual awards range from $1,000 to $6,000 for students who show strong academic achievement and community leadership. More than 6,500 of PG&E's 28,000 employees participate in these groups, all volunteering their time to support the next generation.

"Across the North Coast, we see incredible students who are working hard and giving back to their communities," said Dave Canny, Vice President for PG&E's North Coast Region. The scholarships help reduce financial barriers so more students can build rewarding careers.

The Ripple Effect

Past recipients are already making their mark. Lina Kaci, a 2025 scholarship winner studying computer science at UC Berkeley, plans to work in cybersecurity to keep people safe in the digital age. Kirby Fung, an engineering major at Caltech, wants to create efficient power solutions to tackle climate change.

Since 1989, these employee groups have awarded more than $6 million to thousands of students. The program shows what happens when workers invest directly in their neighbors' futures.

Students can find application details and eligibility requirements on PG&E's website. One month remains to apply for this year's awards, which could make the difference between attending college and sitting it out.
