Philippine Town Plants Hundreds of Trees in Busay Hills

Before sunrise on Saturday, volunteers in Moalboal, Cebu, gathered with seedlings in hand and a simple goal: leave their mountaintop community greener than they found it.

The "Green Legacy Busay" tree planting brought together an inspiring mix of participants. Students and teachers from two local high schools joined forces with municipal officials, environmental groups, and barangay leaders to restore forests in the upland areas of Moalboal.

Mayor Inocentes Cabaron and JCI Moalboal Katropa organized the event, which began at 6:30 a.m. at Municipal Hall. Hundreds of native tree seedlings made the journey up to Barangay Busay's reforestation sites, where volunteers spent the morning planting them in carefully selected areas.

The location matters. These upland forests protect the watersheds that supply water to communities below, provide habitat for native wildlife, and prevent soil erosion during heavy rains.

This single morning of planting creates benefits that will compound for decades. As these trees mature, they'll filter rainwater, stabilize hillsides, and create corridors for birds and other wildlife to thrive.

The students involved gained hands-on environmental education they won't forget. Many had never participated in reforestation before, and seeing the direct impact of their work builds lifelong conservation values.

Organizers announced plans to expand the initiative to other barangays in coming months, turning this single event into a sustained reforestation campaign across the municipality.
