Philippine University Celebrates 65 Years with Unity Games

Thousands of student-athletes marched through Marawi City this week as Mindanao State University launched both its 65th birthday celebration and a week of friendly competition that's bringing its entire campus system together.

The Unity Games 2026 opened September 1st with a Grand Parade of Delegates featuring colorful uniforms, campus chants, and performances from students across the MSU System. The event runs through September 8th at the university's Main Campus Oval Grounds and University Sports Complex.

The opening celebration blended athletics with cultural pride. Following the parade, the Rawaten Cultural Extravaganza showcased regional choreography, institutional performances, and martial arts exhibitions that highlighted the diverse communities MSU serves across Mindanao.

Defending champion MSU-General Santos set an early tone by winning the Best in SALUDO March award in their signature magenta and white colors. Athletes then took the Oath of Sportsmanship alongside technical officials before the ceremonial lighting of the urn officially launched the competition.

The Ripple Effect

This celebration represents more than just campus spirit. MSU's 65th anniversary theme translates to "Culture, Excellence, and Progress Toward an Inclusive University," reflecting the institution's role in serving one of the Philippines' most culturally diverse regions.

The university used the anniversary to pre-launch three new academic initiatives that will expand its research capacity. The Lake Lanao Research Institute, Institute of Bangsamoro Studies and Policy Research, and Mindanao Law Institute will open their doors in the coming months.

Philippine Sports Commission Commissioner Matthew P. Gaston and BARMM Sports Commission Executive Director Salihwardi B. Alba joined MSU System President Paisalin P. D. Tago in delivering messages of support during the opening ceremony. Their presence underscored the regional importance of MSU's continued growth and its commitment to serving students across multiple campuses.

Campuses will continue battling for system-wide supremacy throughout the week, but the real victory is already visible in the unity on display.
