Phoenix Softball Team Wins Final Championship Together

The Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy Phoenix softball team proved they belonged at the state tournament by winning the consolation championship Saturday in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Their 9-3 victory over Redfield capped off an emotional final season together.

The win was especially sweet for a team that started the season 0-3 and entered the tournament as the eighth seed. After losing their opening game Thursday, the Phoenix bounced back with two convincing wins to claim fifth place overall.

"They played awesome. I'm super proud of them," said head coach Kyle Weier as players posed with the championship trophy alongside their families.

But this victory meant more than just another trophy. Saturday's game marked the official end of the four-year Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy partnership, as Marion joins a new cooperative with Parker next season.

Senior catcher Claire Loofbourrow captured the bittersweet emotions of the day. "There's happiness that we made it this far, but there's also the bittersweet feeling that it's never going to be this team again," she said. "I'll never catch Harli again."

The Ripple Effect

This championship shows how collaboration creates opportunities for small schools to compete at higher levels. The Phoenix partnership gave these athletes four years of memories, friendships across schools, and a state tournament experience they earned together.

Loofbourrow's journey with the team reflects the resilience that defined this season. She worried when they started 0-3, but watched her teammates make adjustments and improvements throughout the year. "I'm so proud of where we ended up," she said.

Both Loofbourrow and pitcher Harli Ross earned all-tournament honors for their outstanding play. Freeman will continue as the Flyers next season, carrying forward the lessons learned during this special four-year run.

The Phoenix may have ended their partnership, but they went out as champions who proved they deserved to be there every step of the way.
