Photographer Captures Wolf Moon Over Paris Skyline

Sometimes the most magical moments require patience, planning, and a willingness to stand in the cold while everyone else stays warm inside.

Photographer Martin Giraud noticed something special on his planning app before the new year began. January's full Wolf Moon would align perfectly with both the Eiffel Tower and the Sacré-Cœur Basilica from a location he'd already scouted.

Despite freezing temperatures and morning snow, Giraud checked the forecast and saw clear skies ahead for Paris. He grabbed his Canon camera, attached a telephoto lens, and headed to his chosen spot on the evening of January 3.

The result? A breathtaking composite image showing the moon's journey across the pastel sunset sky, passing directly behind the iron silhouette of the Eiffel Tower.

The moon appeared enormous in Giraud's frame because he positioned himself 3.9 miles from the Eiffel Tower and 6.8 miles from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Using a 500mm lens at this distance created the dramatic scale that makes viewers do a double take.

An atmospheric effect called Rayleigh scattering painted the moon's disk in stunning orange and yellow hues near the horizon. Dark patches across the lunar surface revealed ancient lava flows that filled impact basins billions of years ago.

January's full moon earned the name "Wolf Moon" from the packs of predators whose howling once echoed through winter nights. This particular Wolf Moon occurred near perigee, the closest point in the moon's monthly orbit to Earth, making it a supermoon up to 14% larger than the smallest moon of the year.

Why This Inspires

Giraud's photograph reminds us that extraordinary beauty exists right above our heads, even in the middle of a major city. We don't need to travel to remote locations or own expensive equipment to witness nature's grand performances.

His dedication shows what becomes possible when we pay attention to the world around us, do our homework, and show up even when conditions aren't comfortable. The same sky that ancient humans gazed at still offers wonder to anyone willing to look up.

The image proves that light pollution and urban sprawl haven't stolen all our connections to the cosmos, just transformed how we experience them.
