Picasso's Art Comes to Auckland After 30-Year Wait

After waiting more than 30 years, New Zealanders will finally get to experience Pablo Picasso's genius firsthand when a major retrospective opens at Auckland Art Gallery this fall.

More than 80 original artworks from the Musée national Picasso in Paris will travel to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki starting October 10, 2026. The exhibition runs through February 1, 2027, giving locals and visitors nearly four months to explore nine decades of one of history's most influential artists.

The collection showcases the full range of Picasso's creative evolution, from his famous Blue and Rose periods through his revolutionary Cubist works. Visitors will see 31 original paintings, 18 prints, 11 drawings, 10 ceramics, and 10 sculptures.

What makes this exhibition special is its unconventional curator. British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, known for his colorful and accessible approach to style, has organized the works across 15 distinct sections with fresh eyes.

Smith says he deliberately avoided an academic approach. His goal is to create a visual journey that helps younger audiences and art newcomers connect with Picasso's masterpieces in unexpected ways.

"Taking on the role was one of the greatest honours of my career," Smith said. He wants visitors to see these famous works in a new light, making them feel approachable rather than intimidating.

Dr. Zara Stanhope, director of Auckland Art Gallery, emphasized how rare this opportunity is for New Zealand audiences. Seeing this breadth of Picasso's work in person simply doesn't happen often in this part of the world.

The gallery is adding three Picasso works from its own Robertson Gift collection to the display, creating meaningful connections between the visiting masterpieces and pieces that already call Auckland home.
