Pitso Mosimane Returns to Lead South Africa's National Team

One of Africa's greatest soccer coaches is getting a second chance to lead his home country to glory.

Pitso Mosimane has returned to coach South Africa's Bafana Bafana national team, stepping into a role he last held in 2011. Back then, his tenure ended in heartbreak when the team celebrated qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations, only to discover a rulebook technicality had eliminated them.

But the 62-year-old coach who returns today is vastly different from the one who left. Since 2011, Mosimane transformed into one of African soccer's most successful coaches, winning three African Champions League titles and leading teams across Egypt and the Middle East.

He takes over from Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who achieved something no previous coach had managed. Broos led South Africa to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and their first World Cup appearance since 2010, finishing with a bronze medal in 2023.

Mosimane praised his predecessor's work without hesitation. "He has laid a very good foundation for us," Mosimane said, crediting Broos with instilling discipline and a winning mentality in the squad.

His mentor and former national team coach Jomo Sono believes Mosimane's confidence will be his greatest asset. "Pitso believes that he is the best, and that's why he has achieved so much," Sono explained on Radio 2000, defending what critics sometimes call arrogance as necessary self-belief.

Mosimane's journey shows how setbacks can fuel remarkable comebacks. After leaving South Africa's top club Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020, he led Egypt's Al Ahly to two Champions League finals victories, promoted a Saudi Arabian club from the second division, and coached in Iran before focusing on youth development through his academy.

He's assembled a trusted team of former colleagues, including assistant coach Morena Ramoreboli, who just guided Botswana to their first Africa Cup of Nations qualification in 14 years. Ramoreboli's teams recorded continental victories over South African giants and Moroccan powerhouses, proving he can compete at the highest level.

The immediate goal is clear: qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa faces Kenya, Guinea, and Eritrea in their group, with Mosimane aiming to continue the momentum Broos built.

When asked about criticism, Mosimane stays unbothered, a trait Sono says separates good coaches from great ones. "He's never swayed by critics or the noise of the supporters," Sono noted.

A coach who once celebrated too early now returns with wisdom earned through triumph across three continents, ready to write a redemption story for himself and his nation.
