Playwright Suzie Miller Chose Theatre Over Judge's Salary

When Suzie Miller turned down a magistrate's job in 2009, most people thought she was crazy. She chose theatre over financial security for life, and that gamble just made her Australia's most decorated contemporary playwright.

Miller's journey started with science before the Chernobyl disaster redirected her to law. She spent years as a human rights lawyer, representing women and vulnerable Australians while secretly studying playwriting on the side.

Her breakthrough came with Prima Facie, a legal drama that resonated globally. The show toured Melbourne and Sydney before winning an Olivier Award in London's West End. Australia finally recognized her as one of their own, though only after international success proved her worth.

Her latest hit, Inter Alia, is currently winning awards in London and heads to Broadway later this year. More than a million people watched her 40-plus plays last year alone.

Miller now splits her time between London and Australia, working with theatre companies in both countries. She believes her story is easier today than it was in 2009, as Australian playwrights can build stronger portfolios at home before heading overseas.

Her success proves that betting on yourself, even when everyone else doubts you, can transform not just your life but an entire industry hungry for new voices.
