Poland Coal Giant Invests $75M to Turn Methane Into Power

A coal company is proving that even traditional industries can become part of the climate solution.

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), Poland's biggest coking coal producer, has invested over $75 million since 2015 to capture methane emissions from its mines and turn them into usable energy. Instead of releasing this potent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, the company now converts it into electricity and heat.

The transformation is already paying off. JSW currently operates 11 cogeneration plants across its mines, generating 142,000 megawatt hours of electricity in 2025 alone. That's enough to power a city of 50,000 residents for an entire year.

The company captures over 34 million cubic meters of methane annually from its underground operations. This gas, which naturally escapes during coal mining, gets directed to surface facilities where it fuels boilers and power plants. The electricity runs mining equipment, while the heat warms buildings, water, and mine shafts.

Safety drives the innovation. Methane poses serious risks to miners, so degassing systems protect workers while simultaneously creating a valuable energy resource. Some captured gas even gets sold to outside producers.

JSW isn't stopping at current levels. Construction is underway for 14 additional cogeneration plants that will increase total capacity from 40 megawatts to 60 megawatts. The financial benefits are substantial too, with the company saving over $15 million on electricity purchases in 2025 alone.

The Ripple Effect

The company's ambitious goals extend beyond immediate gains. By 2027, JSW aims to achieve 50% degassing efficiency and economically utilize 95% of all captured methane. Four major research projects worth over $67 million are exploring advanced technologies, including digitizing degassing systems and even producing hydrogen from methane.

This approach shows how industries facing environmental challenges can become pioneers in solutions. JSW is participating in programs like REM, MASTERMINE, ProVAM, and METH2GEN to push innovation further. These initiatives focus on reducing vented methane and developing cutting-edge capture technologies.

The impact ripples through local communities too. Workers gain safer conditions, nearby residents benefit from reduced emissions, and the regional energy grid gets cleaner power. The company demonstrates that environmental responsibility and operational success can advance together.

Mining will always carry environmental concerns, but JSW's investment proves that meaningful progress is possible when companies commit resources and innovation to the challenge.
