Polk County Firefighters Rescue Owl Trapped in Fishing Line

A barred owl dangling from fishing line got a second chance at life thanks to quick-thinking firefighters in Polk County, Florida.

On March 9, Polk County Fire Rescue received an unusual call about a bird in serious trouble. The owl had become entangled in fishing line and was suspended in midair, unable to free itself or reach the ground.

PCFR crews arrived with their ladder truck and carefully approached the distressed bird. Using specialized equipment, firefighters climbed up to reach the owl and gently cut it down from its dangerous position.

The rescue required patience and precision. One wrong move could have further injured the frightened bird or caused it to struggle and hurt itself more.

Once safely on the ground, the owl was turned over to the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. These agencies have trained wildlife specialists who completed the delicate work of removing the fishing line wrapped tightly around the owl's wing.
