Aida Kelly tried to quiet her 3-year-old poodle Squilliam when he started barking relentlessly just before 1 a.m. on Friday. But the determined dog wouldn't listen, pacing back and forth to her bed until she finally got up to see what was wrong.
That's when Kelly smelled the smoke filling her West Milford, New Jersey home. She grabbed Squilliam and rushed toward the living room, only to find it already consumed by flames.
Kelly and her beloved poodle escaped with only seconds to spare. By the time firefighters arrived at the Elm Street home, Fire Marshal Michael Moscatello said the fire was spreading rapidly through the structure.
The house was destroyed. Kelly lost everything she owned in the blaze.

But she's focusing on what matters most: she and Squilliam both made it out alive. "He's my hero, my angel," Kelly said of her four-legged guardian.
Sunny's Take
Dogs have an incredible ability to sense danger before humans do, and Squilliam's persistence is a perfect example. Many house fires happen while families are sleeping, when smoke detectors may be the only warning system.
In this case, Kelly had an even more reliable alarm: a poodle who loved her too much to give up. His refusal to be ignored turned a potential tragedy into a story of survival.
Investigators haven't officially determined what started the fire, though Kelly suspects an extension cord connected to an outdoor refrigerator may be to blame. The cause matters less to her than the outcome.
"He's the best of the best," she said of Squilliam. While homes can be rebuilt and belongings replaced, the loyal companion who woke her at exactly the right moment is truly priceless.
