Portland Bulldogs basketball team celebrating with Maine's Gold Ball trophy at Cross Insurance Arena

Portland Bulldogs Win State Title as No. 6 Seed

🦸 Hero Alert

The Portland High School boys basketball team went from tournament underdogs to state champions, beating top contenders to claim their first Gold Ball since 2017. The sixth-seeded Bulldogs defeated Camden Hills 76-60 in Maine's Class A final, proving that teamwork and perseverance can overcome any ranking.

The Portland Bulldogs weren't supposed to be here, but Saturday night they held up Maine's Gold Ball trophy as state champions anyway.

Seeded sixth in their regional tournament, the Bulldogs capped an unlikely championship run with a convincing 76-60 victory over Camden Hills in the Class A state final at Cross Insurance Arena. It's Portland's first state basketball title since 2017.

"This was a special year just because of the journey we had to take," said longtime Portland coach Joe Russo after winning his sixth state title. The team faced injuries early in the season and struggled to find their rhythm, but everything clicked when it mattered most.

Camden Hills came in with just one loss all season and a superstar player in Nolan Ames, the favorite for Maine's Mr. Basketball award. Ames put on a show in the first half, scoring 20 points to keep his team within striking distance.

But Portland's balanced attack proved impossible to stop. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Cordell Jones with 20 points and Lucas LeGage with 19. Freshman Ephraim Luseko added 12 crucial points off the bench.

The game turned in the third quarter when Portland's defense locked in. Maddox Meas forced three consecutive turnovers early in the fourth quarter, leading to easy layups that stretched the lead to 19 points. "We were just pressuring the ball, anticipating, and I was able to get the steals," Meas said.

Despite Ames finishing with a game-high 30 points, Camden Hills couldn't overcome Portland's smothering defense and team-first mentality. The Windjammers ended their season 20-2, still searching for their first Gold Ball since 2011.

Why This Inspires

Lower seeds winning championships reminds us that rankings and predictions don't define outcomes. The Bulldogs stuck together through injuries and losses, building chemistry one practice at a time. When other teams counted them out, they counted on each other.

Loic Ramazani, who scored 11 points in the final, captured the team's spirit perfectly: "We believed we could beat anybody, but it was a long road to get here."

Portland's victory shows that persistence pays off, teamwork trumps individual talent, and the best stories often come from the most unlikely places.
