Portuguese Startups Coverflex and Unbabel Beat the Odds

On a cold, rainy January evening in Lisbon, 100 entrepreneurs gathered to hear something powerful: how ordinary Portuguese founders built extraordinary companies against all odds.

Miguel Santo Amaro took the stage to share the Coverflex story. His company revolutionized how businesses handle employee benefits by putting everything from meal allowances to retirement plans into one digital card and app. Now companies can offer flexible compensation packages that employees actually customize to fit their lives.

João Graça followed with his journey building Unbabel, an AI translation platform that combines machine learning with human editors. The company now supports over 6,000 language pairs, helping businesses communicate with customers worldwide in real time.

The event itself told another success story. RedBridge, founded in 2022, connects startup communities in San Francisco and Lisbon, creating bridges between entrepreneurs on both sides of the Atlantic. Their partnership with Heden Coworking, hosted in a beautifully restored Gothic building in central Lisbon, shows how the city's startup scene has matured.

László Varga, Heden's co-founder, shared his own path from Google Campus Architect in Silicon Valley to building six co-working spaces across Lisbon. What started as a 500 square meter basement space evolved into a network supporting sustainable community growth across the city's best neighborhoods.

The newest success came from Granter ai, founded by two entrepreneurs named Bernardo who got fed up with confusing EU grant applications. Their AI platform now helps 1,000 businesses navigate public funding, making European grants accessible to startups and small businesses that previously couldn't afford the expertise.
