£1.5B Manchester Hospital Rebuild Creates 5,000 Jobs

A 150-year-old hospital in North Manchester is getting a £1.5 billion transformation that's already changing lives before a single brick is laid.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust announced today that construction of a new Outpatient Centre will begin in 2027, marking the first phase of rebuilding North Manchester General Hospital. The project is the largest NHS capital program Greater Manchester has ever seen.

But here's what makes this special: the hospital rebuild sits at the heart of the Victoria North regeneration scheme, which will create 15,000 new homes in an area that's needed investment for generations. Since 2021, the program has already generated nearly £32 million in social value and secured jobs for 631 local residents.

Construction partner Bovis will help deliver a state-of-the-art facility where every patient gets a single room. The new hospital will be one of the most digitally advanced healthcare facilities in Britain when it opens, serving hundreds of thousands of people across North Manchester, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford.

Professor Matt Makin, who has worked at the hospital for 10 years, says staff currently provide incredible care from facilities designed for healthcare practices that are now decades old. The new building will finally match the quality of care patients deserve.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about modern hospital rooms. The regeneration program has already created 5,000 jobs, all paying at least the Living Wage. It's supported 188 apprenticeships and trained local workers for careers that didn't exist in their neighborhoods before.

Manchester City Council's Deputy Leader Garry Bridges says the impact will be felt across the entire city. The £6 billion opportunity over the next two decades will address long-standing health inequalities while delivering green space and community investment alongside economic growth.
