Pregnant Woman Survives 6-Story Fall in Venezuela Quake

When Dayra Morales fell six stories as her apartment building collapsed during Venezuela's devastating earthquakes in June, surviving seemed impossible. Two weeks later, doctors delivered even more stunning news: she was pregnant, and the baby was perfectly healthy.

"Nothing happened to the baby, even after she fell from the sixth floor of a 12-story building and was trapped from the waist down under so much rubble," said her partner Roberto Rodríguez. "I consider it a true miracle."

The twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela's central-northern region on June 24, killing nearly 5,000 people and leaving 18,000 homeless. Morales was pinned under debris for two hours before neighbors and her partner freed her. While she survived with injuries, Rodríguez's father and young sister died in the collapse.

The couple now stays at a temporary shelter in the José María Vargas sports complex, one of over 100 shelters housing more than 20,000 displaced people. That's where Morales received the surprise on July 2: medical examinations revealed her pregnancy, and both she and the baby were unharmed.

The UN's reproductive health agency UNFPA operates clinics across three major shelters, providing prenatal care, family planning services, and gender-based violence support. They're distributing medical supplies and working with the government to strengthen safety measures as displaced families navigate this crisis.
