Prince William County, Virginia, just became the number one digitally innovative county in America for its population size, proving that smart technology can transform how government serves its people.

The county earned top honors in the 2026 Digital Counties Survey after five straight years of top three finishes. This year, Prince William moved into a larger population category (500,000 to 999,999 residents) and still claimed the crown.

The Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties present the award annually. They recognize counties that use technology to improve operations, enhance resident experiences, and prepare for future challenges.

County Executive Chris Shorter says technology helps deliver on every goal in the county's strategic plan. "Whether someone is requesting a service, participating in a public project or accessing county information, we are creating better experiences today while building the foundation for the future," he said.

The county also impressed judges with AI-powered tools that boost customer service and public safety. These innovations improve efficiency without losing the human touch that matters most.

Dr. Alicia Hart, Deputy County Executive for Government Operations, emphasized that technology works best when it helps people. Every innovation focuses on making county government more accessible, responsive, and secure while giving employees better tools to serve their community.
