Puerto Vallarta LGBTQ+ Office Adopts Beach for Good

A local government office in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is showing that environmental care knows no boundaries by adopting a popular beach in the city's LGBTQ+ district.

The Municipal Sub-Directorate of Sexual Diversity is hosting a community beach cleanup this Saturday at Los Muertos Beach, starting at 8:30 a.m. near the iconic Seahorse sculpture. But this isn't just another volunteer day.

Through an official agreement with Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the office is formally adopting this stretch of coastline. That means they're committing to ongoing care and maintenance of this public natural space for years to come.

"We will assume the responsibility of consistently caring for this public, natural space," said Carlos Plascencia, head of the Sub-Directorate. The adoption agreement allows the office to host community activities like soccer and volleyball tournaments on the beach.

The commitment goes deeper than just organizing events. Plascencia emphasized that any temporary infrastructure will use only organic and natural materials to ensure zero negative environmental impact.

This initiative represents a fresh approach to environmental stewardship. By linking community building with coastal protection, the office is creating a model where social programs and environmental care work hand in hand.

The Zona Romántica neighborhood where the cleanup will happen is both a tourist destination and the heart of Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ community. The beach adoption ensures this beloved gathering place stays clean and welcoming for everyone.

Volunteers joining Saturday's cleanup are encouraged to bring work gloves, reusable water bottles, and extra trash bags. While organizers will provide some plastic collection bags, individual contributions help reduce waste.

The Sub-Directorate of Sexual Diversity was established by Puerto Vallarta's current municipal administration. The agency works to support the local LGBTQ+ community through civic and cultural programs that enhance quality of life and promote visibility.

Their office sits directly above Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Zona Romántica and operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Updates about future beach events and sports tournaments are posted on the office's official Facebook page.
