Puerto Viejo's Wolaba Parade Celebrates Caribbean Heritage

A vibrant celebration of culture and community returns to Costa Rica's Caribbean coast this Saturday, and locals are ready to show the world what makes Puerto Viejo special.

The 12th annual Wolaba Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on August 29, bringing more than 30 groups together for a spectacular display of music, dancing, and colorful costumes along Puerto Viejo's main street. This year's theme, "BIG PARADE – Feel the Vibes," captures the energy of an event that has become one of the South Caribbean's most beloved cultural celebrations.

The parade's name comes from Limonese Creole, where "Wolaba" means "Old Harbor," the English translation of Puerto Viejo. It's a fitting tribute to a community deeply rooted in Afro-Caribbean heritage, where traditions in food, music, language, and culture have shaped the region's identity for generations.

Local families, musicians, and dancers created Wolaba in 2013 with a simple goal: to celebrate their heritage on their own terms. Rather than putting on a show for tourists, the community takes over the streets for themselves, honoring their ancestors and sharing their culture with pride.

The timing carries extra meaning this year. Saturday's parade falls during Costa Rica's Historical Month of Afro-Descendant People and just two days before the country observes the Day of the Black Person and Afro-Costa Rican Culture on August 31.

Wolaba runs entirely on community power. Local businesses, organizations, entrepreneurs, sponsors, and volunteers handle everything from logistics to food and accommodations for participants.

That grassroots support proved critical when the parade nearly disappeared. In 2024, organizers couldn't raise enough money, and the event was canceled for the first time. The community rallied to bring it back in 2025, proving that Wolaba matters deeply to Puerto Viejo.
