Punjab Covers Cancer Treatment Up to $120K Free

Thousands of cancer patients in Punjab, India woke up to transformative news this World Cancer Day. The state announced it will cover cancer treatment costs up to 10 lakh rupees (approximately $120,000 USD) under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, the Chief Minister's Health Program.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh made the announcement at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in New Chandigarh. The timing couldn't be more meaningful for families who've watched their savings disappear into medical bills.

Punjab has opened two state-of-the-art cancer institutes that are changing everything. The facilities in Sangrur and New Chandigarh together offer 450 beds and provide advanced cancer care that rivals treatment anywhere in the world.

For years, cancer patients from Punjab's Malwa region had to board what locals called the "cancer train" to Rajasthan for treatment. Those exhausting journeys, often taken by families already emotionally and financially drained, are now ending.

Today, the situation has flipped entirely. Punjab's cancer centers are so advanced that patients from neighboring states now travel to Punjab for treatment.

The Ripple Effect

The impact goes beyond the hospital walls. Punjab is connecting all 23 district hospitals through telemedicine, creating a hub-and-spoke model where expert oncologists can consult on cases remotely. Day Care Cancer Centres are being established in every district.

Dr. Singh celebrated World Cancer Day with young "Little Warriors" battling blood cancer. He cut cake with the children and watched them walk a confidence-building ramp, emphasizing that positive thinking and strong willpower make a real difference in fighting the disease.

The minister also highlighted prevention, encouraging Punjab's residents to adopt healthier lifestyles. Around 175,000 people already participate daily in free yoga sessions under the state's 'CM di Yogshala' program.

Dr. Ashish Gulia, the hospital director, noted that comprehensive cancer care is being provided at nominal rates thanks to support from both the Punjab government and India's Department of Atomic Energy.

The announcement included free cancer diagnosis camps and recognition for staff members working tirelessly to serve patients. For families facing a cancer diagnosis, the message is clear: quality treatment is now accessible and affordable, right in their home state.
