Punjab Offers 40 Free Shows of Epic Ramayana Play

Theater tickets can be expensive, but Punjab just decided that powerful stories should reach everyone, not just those who can afford them.

The state government approved a plan to stage 40 free performances of "Humare Ram" across Punjab, covering the entire cost of the popular theatrical production. The play, starring acclaimed actor Ashutosh Rana, reimagines the timeless Ramayana story and typically sells tickets starting at 799 rupees.

Finance Minister Harpal Cheema announced the decision after Tuesday's Cabinet meeting. The shows will roll out in September and October across major cities including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala, Bathinda, Mohali, and Ludhiana.

The government plans to use university auditoriums and public institutions as venues, with each location accommodating around 2,500 people. Cities with high demand could see multiple performances, ensuring no one misses out.

"We are out to do lok sewa," explained a government source, using the Hindi term for public service. The Cultural Affairs Committee will coordinate the logistics and finalize which cities host how many shows.
