😊 Feel Good

A Brisbane couple who met in their mid-50s now performs together on stage, proving it's never too late for love or rock and roll. Ursula Collie became a first-time bride at 61 and is still jumping around on stage at 66.

Mick Medew had given up on love at 55 when a Facebook post changed everything. The Screaming Tribesmen rocker met Ursula Collie, a music fan who didn't know about his rock star past, and discovered the perfect harmony.

After a year of friendship, their first date in 2015 sealed the deal. "After the kiss in the driveway, I thought, oh yes, this is going to work," Ursula remembers.

But their romance moved slowly for a beautiful reason. Mick was caring for his mother in her 90s, and Ursula never pressured him to choose between them.

"She let me look after my mum and I was very thankful for that," Mick says. Ursula would visit a couple of nights each week, staying briefly after Mick put his mother to bed.

Both of their mothers passed away in 2018, and the couple moved in together. They bought a house in Brisbane with their combined inheritances in 2020, giving Ursula the financial security she'd worried about as a nanny approaching retirement.

In 2021, Ursula became a first-time bride at 61, wearing a white dress with gold beading she'd bought from Vinnies 30 years earlier. "I said to myself, if I ever get married, I'll wear this dress," she says.

Sunny's Take

What makes this love story shine isn't just the romance. During COVID lockdowns, Ursula found an old keyboard, cleaned it up, and started teaching herself Gary Numan songs on YouTube.

Mick joined in, and suddenly they weren't just life partners but musical ones too. The couple now performs together at Brisbane venues like The Triffid.

At 66, Ursula still jumps around on stage, making eye contact with Mick and sharing smiles. She even wrote a song called "Punk Grandma" that earns her royalties, joining Mick's earnings from his rock career.

Mick never had children of his own, admitting he was "too wrapped up" in music when he was younger. But Ursula's grandchildren, now seven and three, have been around since they were born, and he loves being involved in their lives.

The secret to their happiness? Spending almost all their time together without getting tired of each other. "I feel lucky that it works for us to be together almost all the time," Mick says.

Ursula loves his easygoing nature and sense of humor, while Mick says her happiness is contagious in the best possible way.

Love found them when they'd stopped looking, and now they're making beautiful music together in every sense.
