Quebec Wind Farm to Power 44,000 Homes Secures Funding

Two energy giants just locked in funding for a wind farm big enough to power a small city, marking a major win for Canada's clean energy future.

EDF Renewables and Hydro-Québec secured full financing for the Madawaska Wind Energy Project in Quebec's Bas-Saint-Laurent region. The project moves forward after receiving government approval and backing from four major banks, including the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and National Bank of Canada.

The wind farm will feature 45 turbines generating 274 megawatts of clean electricity. That's enough power to light up more than 44,000 homes every year without burning a single ounce of fossil fuel.

Construction will begin in the municipalities of Dégelis and Saint-Jean-de-la-Lande. Once complete, the facility will feed directly into Hydro-Québec's grid under a long-term power purchase agreement, ensuring stable energy distribution for decades.

The financing package follows Green Loan Principles, meeting strict sustainable finance standards. This means lenders verified the project's environmental benefits and long-term viability before committing millions.

The Ripple Effect

The Madawaska project proves that clean energy investments can transform entire regions, not just power grids.

Over 300 construction jobs will open up during the building phase, giving workers in the region steady employment. The project will pump approximately $181 million into local communities throughout its operational life, funding schools, infrastructure, and services.

Amy Lloyd, CFO of EDF Power Solutions North America, emphasized the project's community focus. She noted that securing this financing proves both the commercial strength of the wind farm and the power of working closely with local communities.

The collaboration between a French renewable energy leader and one of the world's largest hydropower producers shows how international partnerships can tackle climate challenges. Each company brings different strengths to create something neither could build alone.
