Quick-Thinking Teachers Save All Students in Nepal Floods

When flash floods roared toward Shree Bagheswori Madhyamik School in Nepal's Dhading district last Wednesday, teachers had only minutes to act. They made the call that saved every child's life.

"The teachers said, 'There is a flood and you should leave bags and tiffins,'" recalled Lakshmi Shrestha, whose child attends the school. Students dropped everything and ran to safety just before muddy water surged through their classrooms.

One group of students got lucky with timing. They had just left for their lunch break when the water hit. But teachers in other classrooms recognized the danger approaching and immediately ordered evacuations.

By Sunday, when families returned to search for belongings, thick brown mud coated every surface. Lines on the walls showed how high the water had risen. Small backpacks with colorful key chains sat in muddy piles, waiting to be claimed.

Kopila Mizar couldn't find her son's backpack among the debris. She didn't care. "My son is alive, that is my biggest happiness," she said.

The catastrophic floods destroyed or damaged at least 69 schools across Nepal, putting nearly 19,000 children's education at risk. Those numbers are expected to rise as rescue teams reach more remote areas.
