Racer Katherine Legge Tackles 1,100-Mile Challenge This Month
Katherine Legge will attempt to become the first woman to complete motorsport's "Double" on Memorial Day weekend, racing in both the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Only one driver has ever finished all 1,100 miles of this grueling challenge.
This Memorial Day weekend, Katherine Legge will chase motorsport history by attempting something only five drivers have ever tried and just one has completed.
The 45-year-old racer plans to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. That means racing 1,100 miles across two states in under 24 hours, a feat so demanding it's simply known as "The Double."
Tony Stewart remains the only driver to complete every mile of both races, finishing sixth at Indy and third at Charlotte in 2001. John Andretti, Robbie Gordon, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson all attempted it but fell short.
Legge brings serious credentials to the challenge. She's competed in four previous Indy 500 races, with her best finish placing 22nd in 2012. Last season she made her NASCAR Cup Series debut, posting a season-high 17th place finish at the Brickyard 400.

"It's meticulously organized down to the minute," Legge told USA Today. "I just have to turn left a bunch of times that day."
Why This Inspires
Legge's attempt arrives exactly 50 years after Janet Guthrie became the first woman to practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Guthrie didn't qualify that year but immediately drove to Charlotte and finished 15th in the World 600, showing the same determination Legge embodies today.
The timing honors decades of progress while highlighting work still needed. Danica Patrick, who famously finished third at the 2009 Indy 500 and started on pole for the 2013 Daytona 500, retired in 2018 as the last woman in Cup Series racing until Legge's debut.
"How many years out are we from having the next me?" Legge asked, noting the gap in women coming through racing's ranks. She's determined to keep the door open for future generations while she has the chance.
Whether she completes every mile or not, Legge is proving that the biggest barriers fall when someone simply shows up ready to race.
