Rare Mexican Bat Found 900 Miles From Home in Nebraska Office

When employees walked into their Omaha office building one September morning, they found an unexpected visitor crouched on the floor: a small bat, far from home.

The Nebraska Humane Society quickly transported the bat to Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, where staff made an exciting discovery. This wasn't one of the 14 bat species normally found in Nebraska. It was a cave myotis, a mouse-eared bat typically found only in Mexico and the American Southwest.

"Halloween came early to the Wildlife Center with the arrival of yet another bat species never before documented in Nebraska!" the rehab center announced on social media.

The cave myotis gets its name from roosting in caves, mines, and similar sheltered spaces across Mexico and the southwestern United States. Nebraska sits hundreds of miles outside this species' known range, making this sighting historic.

Wildlife experts believe they've solved the mystery of how this tiny traveler ended up so far north. The bat likely tucked herself into a shipment or piece of freight from her native region and emerged after the cargo arrived in Omaha.

"It's not unheard of for wildlife to hitch an unintended ride in transported goods," the rehab center explained. "Her unusual location and circumstances make an accidental journey a plausible explanation."

This accidental adventure gave Nebraska's wildlife team something special: the chance to document a species never before recorded in their state while giving one lost bat a safe landing spot.

Nebraska Wildlife Rehab treats more than 8,000 animals each year, with most eventually returning to the wild. Whatever brought this particular bat to Omaha, she found expert care when she needed it most.

Sometimes the best discoveries happen by accident, and this little stowaway proved that wonder can show up anywhere, even on an office floor on an ordinary Tuesday morning.
